Lucky Seven! My seventh podcast gets to be about the hottest news story since Joanie left Chachi (and if you're not old enough to understand that reference that means I'm getting really old). Anyway this Imus' firing stuff has been all over the media and I just spoke on it long enough to say, don't talk about this at work! While I'm a believer in the importance of having open, candid conversations to get to know people and to be known to people, some topics are just way too hot to be responsibly discussed in the workplace in a casual way. The whole discussion isn't merely a black versus white issue because too many blacks are using this as a discussion about the hip hop music community's view of black women, the relevance of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, the best approach to handling a situation like this or whether a situation like this requires handling at all, etc. Right thinking, well meaning people coming to different conclusions. Where's Rodney King at a time like this? Thanks for the visit, please feel free to post a comment! Okay, I didn't get a chance to visit Southfork like I planned and it was a record cold for Texas in April, but other than that, it was a great trip. I spoke at Southern Methodist University (thanks Steve Denson) and got every bit as much as I hope I gave. I talked about my book "Working While Black" to a captive audience of about 80 people and it never ceases to amaze me that the things I talk about always seem to hit the same buttons with people over and over again. If most employers in this country could see how many beautifully professional, sensible, hard working brothers and sisters had the same issues and observations as the black employees they write off as difficult, attitudinal and malcontent troublemakers, they would probably be shocked. Oh well, those who work while black know. :-) Watercooler talk - none this week, but I'll have to look for something juicy in the next few days. Thanks for visiting! Feel free to post a comment. So the main topic I cover in this week's podcast is the importance of remembering that when job hunting, potential employers DO "google" and otherwise look up whatever information they can find on someone they are thinking of offering a job to. So, do you want to take a chance that your MySpace page, website, or even email address paints a picture of you that makes a potential employer view you in anything less than a completely professional light? Watercooler topic: the general issue of our young brothers and sisters leaving college early to get drafted to a professional career as an athlete. What are your thoughts on that? Once again, thanks for your time and walk on the journey with me! (I have to give a special shout out to be two little dogs who have been so quiet while I've worked on this podcast. Those of you with pets and/or children know what a blessing that can be!) Michelle

I talk about how this is an example of what makes the experience of blacks in the workplace different. Watercolor talk: Frenchie's protest against the American Idol producers - why did she get kicked off for nudie pictures a few seasons ago while the white girl with nudies got to stay. Good question! Thanks for listening! Michelle

This week's topic is also the watercooler talk topic: is being black in America a cultural/social construct or does it strictly boil down to genetics? Although I didn't explore it in the podcast, I guess it could be and probably is both. This week's topic is also the watercooler talk topic: is being black in America a cultural/social construct or does it strictly boil down to genetics? Although I didn't explore it in the podcast, I guess it could be and probably is both. The topic is part of the national, ongoing discussion on whether Barack Obama is "black enough" to be the first Black president since his mother is White and his father is African. Is he Black enough? Or is that just a stupid question? Tell me what you think and thanks for showing up! Michelle
