The corporate world is filled with executives, men and women who have worked hard for years to reach the upper levels of management. Theyre intelligent, skilled, and even charismatic. But only a handful of them will ever reach the pinnacle -- and as executive coach Marshall Goldsmith shows in this book, subtle nuances make all the difference. These are small "transactional flaws" performed by one person against another (as simple as not saying thank you enough), which lead to negative perceptions that can hold any executive back. Using Goldsmiths straightforward, jargonfree advice, its amazingly easy behavior to change.
Executives who hire Goldsmith for one-on-one coaching pay $250,000 for the privilege. With this book, his help is available for 1/10,000th of the price.

Good book. Parts seem to drag on by rehashing the same point after I already understood what Goldsmith was referring to. However the book is worth reading, you just have to be patient with the stories. The application section is the best part. I think we can all learn something from this book whether it be a large problem we need to change within our interpersonal relationships or a few smaller problems. The fact is we all need to continually change and evolve. To be the best you can be means you have to keep learning, keep improving and keep trying to better yourself. I think this book provides some helpful ideas of how to help you conitinually strive to be the best you that you can be.

Initially purchased this book because of its intriguing title and all the 5-star recommendations.
Ironically, I was reading this book during one of the worst weeks of my marriage and this book literally saved it.
The principles that Mr. Goldsmith points out and elaborates on are just as good for marriage (if not more so) as they are for CEOs and other high-ranking corporate officers.
There are enough reviews from others that cover all the topics so I won't waste any more time, space, or words.
Bottom line: get this book and read it. It is well worth the time and money and could save your skin too.
Thanks again, Mr. Goldsmith. God bless.

Marshall is excellent..He doesn't sacrifice the content for fluff - easy to sell key-words. I have noticed that these books require some contemplation and quiet reading, you will not benefit unless you can really understand his message.
That being said, his insights on behavioral traps and common human mistakes we make, andhow to improve ourselves is amazing. A definite read and a book to keep

I am an executive coach for a large organization. I find Marshall's insights and down to earth words an essential tool when begining the coaching conversation with the executives I work with. I am able to provide insight into their behaviors that will limit their success while providing them a view of what the behavior looks like and how it impacts others. An easy read which is important to executives that already feel they don't have time for their on development.

Listening makes you a better person -- that's the bottom line, and this book articulates strategies to help make it happen. Read it, share it with friends and colleagues, and then read it again. Leader or follower, this book will help you better understand yourself and others, and will enable you to improve your behavior. Read, listen, learn, and improve.
